PERRY FIRST FRIDAYS – “RESOLVE" TO SHOP LOCAL IN 2026

Mark your calendar now and celebrate the first Friday of each month in Perry, NY! The Perry Main Street Association, the Arts Council for Wyoming County and local business owners are collaborating to create a series of free First Friday events for a year of fun! Each event will run from 3 to 6pm and offer something different to participants, from snacks to games and from discounts to music and more.

Start you year off right by attending the very first First Friday of the year on January 2nd, Resolve to Shop Local in 2026!

For this event, pick up a game board at any of the twenty participating Perry businesses. As you visit each stop listed on the board, collect proof that you went there, and win prizes. Once you’ve visited at least five stops, go to Act 4 Books at 4 South Main Street to turn in your game board.

Visit five businesses and receive a candy bar. Visit ten and be entered in a drawing for a $25 Give Perry certificate. Visit 15 or more stops and the drawing prize increases to $50.

New Welcome Signs Brighten Village of Perry Entrances

The Perry Main Street Association (PMSA) proudly announces four new gateway signs at the major entrances to the Village of Perry. The attractively designed signs, created by SignLanguage Inc., Perry, N.Y., include the village’s sea serpent logo, the PMSA website (iloveperryny.com) and the Genesee Trail Towns logo.

Each sign includes a banner with its sponsor’s name. PMSA acknowledges and thanks for four Perry businesses that underwrote individual signs. Sponsorship and location are:

Creative Food Ingredients, South 39 (Main St.)

JN White, North 246 (Center St.)

Perry Veterinary Clinic, North 39 (Main St.)

Tompkins Banking, west Lake St.

PMSA collaborated with the Village and Town of Perry to finalize the project. Through a memorandum of understanding, the village took ownership of the signs once installed, and the town will finance their annual maintenance to extend their vibrancy.

“Thank you PMSA on behalf of the village for all the work and coordination to get these signs in the ground,” says Rick Hauser, village mayor. “They look so sharp.”

“The village gateway signs are vital for creating a welcoming and distinctive entrance to our community,” says Sean Valdes, PMSA chairperson and Perry Tompkins branch manager. “The PMSA deeply appreciates the volunteers and business donors who help to make these beautiful signs possible.”

“The Town of Perry has made a commitment to PMSA and the village to continue to partner on projects that promote our community,” says Tracy Rozanski, a town board member and its liaison to the PMSA board.

The Perry Main Street Association is a volunteer-led advocacy organization that supports Perry businesses and activities through a range of programs and projects These include the Mayor’s Community Projects Fund that cost-shares such things as perpendicular signs and a Curbside Appeal Program for businesses seeking assistance on their public appearance.

Two recently instituted PMSA projects have been of particular benefit to businesses. The volunteer Main Street Manager has met with business owners, encouraged the use of the PMSA Give Perry certificates and provided helpful information on PMSA and village programs. Also, PMSA engaged Sarah McGinnis Photography to launch an active social media presence. Her work includes visits to local businesses to take photos and create video. These are available to the business at no cost, if a PMSA member, for their social media and also appear as PMSA Facebook and Instagram posts and reels.

PERRY MAIN STREET ASSOCIATION REQUESTS PROPOSALS FOR DRI MARKETING AND PLATFORM OVERHAUL

The Perry Main Street Association is looking to hire a consultant to help us refocus and rebrand our internal and external communication platform to help Perry achieve the DRI/Strategic Investment Plan goals and better meet the needs of a new generation of volunteers. This update will make great strides in allowing the PMSA to communicate effectively both locally and regionally, connecting residents and visitors to our village in an authentic and mutually beneficial way.

We're looking to hire a firm that can collaboratively work with our community and our PMSA board to develop two new brand identities to help us connect to locals and visitors alike. Informed by public outreach, and sculpted by PMSA goals and objectives, this firm will then create two new websites that will act as streamlined platforms for community members to upload content relevant to the groups mission. To showcase these two new websites and their intended uses, the contractor will additionally generate content for both of them as a final task.

The perfect candidate would be someone with a strong local knowledge of Perry NY and the Genesee Valley Region, and is familiar already with many of the existing plans and efforts for the Silver Lake Trail, Letchworth Gateway Villages, the LWRP, and other revitalization efforts.

'Give Perry' Gift Certificates Offer Multiple Rewards

Seeking the 'perfect gift'? Perry employers and organizations are happy to report they have found it, in the form of Give Perry certificates.

Give Perry certificates, a program of the Perry Main Street Association (PMSA), can be used like cash at any PMSA member business, allowing companies such as JN White, Tompkins Community Bank and Hart’s Insurance to give local to their employees and to support fellow Perry businesses.

Trini Kuzmicki, President of Hart’s Insurance, rewards her team with Give Perry certificates for reaching goals. “The Give Perry certificates are easy to use, and employees appreciate the special recognition.” “The Give Perry certificate program, begun in 2012 by PMSA, is unique to our community,” says Eleanor Jacobs, PMSA board chair. “The certificates, in $10 and $25 denominations, are a win-win: They support local businesses while being an easy, yet useful, gift.”

And not only businesses purchase Give Perry. The Perry Rotary Club liked the idea of shopping and giving local so much that they funded $1,000 in Give Perry certificates for distribution to deserving Perry Central School District students and their families.

Give Perry certificates are available at Tompkins Community Bank, Perry branch, and can be purchased by anyone.

2020 Chalk Art Event with the Perry Farmers' Market

Perry's 2020 Chalk Art Event is August 15th!

“The Twenties” will be all the rage ...

Come to the downtown Festival Plaza in Perry, NY, from 8:30am to 4:30pm to see professional artists’ unique interpretations rendered large at this year’s event.

Over 20 artists will work throughout the day to create 5’x5’ pastel works, and Feature Artist Erika Thurkins of East Aurora will work at a 10’x10’ scale in the pavilion area of the plaza. The plaza will be closed through 3pm Sunday afternoon for those who wish to view the art at their own pace.

Music lovers will enjoy live performances and a shaded seating area all day. Kelly's Old Timers, Creek Bend, and The Brothers Blue will be playing.

Guests can pick up homegrown produce and enjoy all the usual benefits of the Perry Farmers’ Market, located on Borden Avenue this week from 8:30am-12:30pm.

In a nod to this year’s unique community health issues, local artist Michael Sparling has reimagined the festival’s mascot, this time, appropriately masked.

All guests will be asked to wear a face covering and to practice social distancing while on the festival plaza.

Late Summer Arbor Day Celebration & Pruning Workshop

The Village of Perry Tree Board is hosting a special Arbor Day event this year, a pruning workshop on August 27th, 2020 at 6:30pm.

All residents are invited.

The workshop will be held in the Village Park at Lake Street and it will be conducted by Don Gasiewicz, Wyoming County Cornell Cooperative Extension horticulture/natural resources community educator.

In November 2019, Letchworth Gateway Villages launched ExploreGeneseeValley.com, a digital mapping project started in 2018 with local partners and residents to map the best experiences, stories and attractions in the Genesee Valley....

The Goal? To Create a Living Guide to our Region

National Geographic created a program in 2002 to foster sustainable tourism based on the idea that “the best travel advice comes from the people that live there” — and they called the place-based digital platform tools they established to support this the Map Guide program.

Through crowd-sourcing points of interest from locals (us!), Map Guide projects help develop and communicate a unique story of place. The resulting web-based tools help connect travelers to places through the contributions of people that live in a destination like ours, the Genesee Valley!

Why? Business Stability & Growth

The ultimate goal of the Genesee Valley Map Guide Project is to promote economic stability and visibility for the small communities within the region.

“One of the major challenges we have in rural areas is online visibility,” says Nicole Manapol, Letchworth Gateway Villages Director. “The Genesee Valley Map Guide not only provides a platform to promote our region online, it also serves as a tool to teach local businesses and organizations how to improve their online presence and enhance searchability.”

Both residents and local businesses can get involved. Local experts and visitors alike are encouraged to get involved by mapping the places and experiences that capture the Genesee Valley’s unique character, heritage, and beauty.

PMSA is pleased to announce the winners of the “Picture Perry” Photo Competition, organized to build a resource base of images that capture the Perry, New York, experience to help us promote our village and the community. The competition was limited to non-professional photographers; judges were not provided with the names of the photographers.

More than 75 pictures were submitted across the categories of People, Places and Culture. Winners will receive GIVE PERRY gift certificates.

Winners are:

BEST OF SHOW
Ann Burlingham ($50 certificate), for "Perry Library," which plays a role in “connecting people to each other and the world, near and far.”

PEOPLE CATEGORY
Bethany Zerbe ($25 certificate), for “Michael Dischavana Prunes the Village’s New Cherry Trees,” which line Perry’s Cherry Street. This picture highlights the way that people pitch in and volunteer in Perry.

PLACE CATEGORY
Howard Ellis ($25 certificate), for “Chalk Art at its Finest,” the yearly July festival that brings over 50 chalk artists to the site of Perry's Farmer's Market to create fine, temporary works of art.

CULTURE CATEGORY:
Devon Kelly ($25 certificate) for “Shake on the Lake,” the Perry-based professional theater company that stages outdoor summer Shakespeare performances on the shores of Silver Lake, at the Perry Public Beach.

The Perry Main Street Association is excited to announce the “Picture Perry” Photo Competition! The task to Perry area residents is simple: Submit up to three photographs of Perry as YOU picture it!

What is it like for you to live in this community? What memorable experiences could your images recount to the rest of the world? Does your cell phone gallery hold unforgettable shots of favorite people, moments, and destinations you’d authorize us to reproduce and showcase when promoting Perry?

Deadline: Submit your entries by 11:59 pm on Friday, May 8^th. You may submit up to one photo per category (up to 3 submissions total).

CATEGORIES

People (portraits of a Perry resident, family or group; persons portrayed need to be identified by name and authorize the reproduction of their image)
Place (streets, lake or parks, commercial and other establishments, residences and other architecture, etc.)
Culture (festivals, farming, sports/school events, religious or other celebrations, dance, music and theatrical performances, etc.)

2020 Census: You Make Perry Count

The 2020 Census is on!

I’m sure most of us remember the 2010 census, and the usual census takers knocking on doors to ask a series of questions about the people living in your house.

It happens every ten years, and, for the most part, the process has been unchanged since the first census in 1790. Until now!!

For the first time ever the 2020 census will be primarily Self-Initiated.

This means that the people coming around to knock on doors will be the last resort instead of the first.

Instead, this census the American people are asked to self-report.

This process will hopefully save the federal government money and manpower. There is also the hope that this process will allow us to report back more trustworthy numbers.

As you probably remember, the 2010 census reported New York State’s population so low that the state lost two seats in the US House of Representatives.

It is estimated now that New York State was undercounted roughly 20-25%.

Partially this is due to the undercounting of homeless populations, but also the dramatic undercounting of people in rural areas like Perry.

Self-Initiated means that it’s in our control now! We can make sure that we are properly counted, and therefore, state and federal money is appropriated to us fairly.

Letters will be coming to every address mid-March. These letters will have instructions on how to respond to the census online or by phone.

Each house will receive three reminder letters.

The final letter will have a paper census form that can be filled out and mailed in.

If you have any questions or concerns about the census your local library is ready and willing to help out.

2020 Census: Make Perry Count

As you may have already heard, the 2020 complete census will be starting over the next couple months.

Everyone will be getting an invitation to take the Census in the mail in March 2020.

This letter will have a link to a website where you can fill out your census via the internet.

If you don’t have access to the internet at home, please go to your local library to fill it out.

You may also call in to respond to the Census. If you have questions there is a hotline for the Census and the staff at the library has been trained to respond to most questions.

Reporting our population accurately is very important for things like governmental representation and government funding allocation - you can’t decide how big of a piece of pie you should cut until you know how many people will be eating!

The importance of responding to the census cannot be overstated.

The federal government uses these figures to determine things like how many US Representatives your state gets in Congress, as well as how many points your state is worth in the Electoral College. Nearly every part of governance is affected in some way by the results of the census.

There is no way to overstate the importance of the Census.

Gifts that Give: Perry Beach Project

You may have noticed that the Perry Main Street Association is helping with fundraising effort to support the Perry Beach Project, including docks!

The Perry Beach project is an investment in free public access to Silver Lake, and a key location on the Silver Lake Trail.

Our efforts are multiplied by those of two local artists, James Reynolds and Esther Frank-Doyle, who created a collection of original artwork celebrating the Quaint Cottages of Silver Lake, with the idea that the art could help with fundraising for the Perry Beach project.

Spoiler alert: Proceeds from artwork go to the Perry Beach project.

How does the Perry Main Street Association fit in?

This type of collaboration is right up our alley for several reasons:

Food Tourism Forum at Genesee Country Village & Museum

On Monday, October 21st, Letchworth Gateway Villages held a Food Industry Forum. The event brought together stakeholders of many types to highlight the talent and tastes of the region and engage the group in a day of conversation and experiences focused on growing food tourism.

This conversation builds on the work of many (for example, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Wyoming County Chamber and Tourism, and event hosts - the Genesee Country Village & Museum) and added the expertise of the Culinary Tourism Alliance and experience of Chef Eric Boynar of rural destination restaurant sixthirtynine in Ontario, Canada.

Silver Lake Brewing Project Hosts Reception and Fundraising Event for Perry Beach Renovation Project with PMSA

The Perry Main Street Association invites everyone to visit Silver Lake Brewing Project on Tuesday, August 27th, 2019 at 5pm for a reception to benefit the Perry Beach renovation project.

Come visit with neighbors and friends, see plans for the project and toast the work of James Reynolds & Esther Doyle, the artists behind the 'Quaint Cottages' series which features cottages from the Silver Lake Institute on posters, art prints, framed art, and notecards. Plans for the reception include light refreshments and artist remarks.

The Perry Beach renovation project is being supported by many groups, including Perry Rotary, a key contributor whose generous donation helped the project get out of the starting gates.

The project budget outlines a community fundraising goal of $35,000.00. All funds raised through this event, and the purchase of 'Quaint Cottages' artworks will go toward that goal.

The 'Quaint Cottages' exhibit will on view at the Silver Lake Brewing Project into September 2019. Donations for art prints, framed art and notecards may be made at Silver Lake Brewing Project on the night of the event, and after the event.

Perry Has An Official Book: Henry Loves Hills

Henry Loves Hills is Perry's official book written by Perry native Patrick E. Brennan in response to a competition organized by Read Around Perry, a Rotary-initiated community literacy program with support from the Town of Perry Bicentennial Committee in 2014. It tells the story of a school bus, named Henry, who negotiates the beautiful rolling hills of Perry bringing children to and from school everyday.

Henry, and driver Ed, confront and overcome their biggest challenge taking readers on a trip through a major snow storm. Sally Snowplow helps out.

Brennan, who graduated from PCS, based Henry Loves Hills on his experience of a bus ride during the infamous Blizzard of 1977. Dan Butler, a Village of Perry resident and 2015 Perry Chalk Art Festival featured artist, is the illustrator.
